I just saw Ratatouille yesterday for the first time, and while it was enjoyable, it wasn't nearly of the same caliber as WALL-E. If Ratatouille earned itself even brief talks of a Best Picture nomination, I can see WALL-E making it all the way.

Oh, I'd never call Ratatouille anywhere near the quality of WALL-E. Like some on the "overrated movies" thread, I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't say it was Best Picture material and any such talk I would have pooh-poohed away.
I really think that WALL-E deserves a nomination at the very least -- and I haven't felt this way about ANY animated film before. (Even "Beauty and Beast" didn't seem to me like it should have even been nomiated.) This film really is THAT good.

I actually kind of agree with that. Don't get me wrong, Beauty and the Beast was a great movie with some great songs in it. But Best Picture? I just don't know about that. I know there are a number of the 2-D animated Disney movies that I would rank higher than it.
And just for comparison purposes, Ratatouille got a 95% on Rotten Tomatoes, while WALL-E has a 97%. So, at least, according to that site, if Ratatouille deserved the Oscar talk, then WALL-E definitely does.

There was a fair bit of Oscar buzz for Ratatouille, but not as much as I'm currently seeing for WALL-E.
In any case, Rat got five nominations in this year's awards, which was the most for any film not nominated for Best Picture. Hopefully WALL-E will pick up even more nominations. Pixar certainly deserves it.

I thought Beauty and The Beast was really good. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. But I agree. It didn't really deserve a BP nom. There wasn't anything really unique or special about it. Wall-E is oozing with it, and that to me, is what makes it deserving rather than other films.

So far, I think it totally deserves it. Ditto.

Wow, it is so nice to see WALL•E bumped back up to 97 on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer! It started there, then dipped to 96 . . . I wonder how it made it back up to 97? Looking at WALL•E's Rotten Tomatoes page at . . . www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wall_e/ . . . there does seem to be a wave of new glowing reviews on the main page . . . many seeming to be written weeks after the film's American release! They are enjoyable to read. This collective ranking of critics' reviews by Rotten Tomatoes I think is one of the most clear and compelling reasons why WALL•E deserves a nomination for the Best Picture Oscar. Fortunately, Rotten Tomatoes seems to have become something of a respected and referred-to institution within the Hollywood community; so this unusual ranking "bump-up", weeks after the films release, should help WALL•E's bid for a Best Picture nomination. Also, don't underrate BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. In comparing it with previous Disney tellings of classic fairy tales, BEAUTY seems to have a much richer and better developed story overall, as well as a deeper and more emotionally-engaging love story, and more of a sense of "gravitas" to it. It almost seemed to have some of the depth and grandeur that SOUND OF MUSIC did (which was arguably the greatest and most moving movie musical of all time.) Disney films like SLEEPING BEAUTY though left me feeling quite unengaged and flat. By the way, it's not too early to start thinking about it here . . . consider hiking on over to the People's Choice Awards at www.pcavote.com , register, and start voting for WALL•E in both their periodic "buzz" polls when movie topics come up, and vote in their annual awards poll. The Peoples Choice Awards are one of those leading "barometric" indicators that take place each January, and sometimes influence the Academy Awards a couple months later. So here is a not insignificant opportunity to vote and influence Hollywood awards for our favorite film (. . . which is justifiably excellent, of course!)

Wall-E should get nominated. Ratatouille - in my opinion- is also very good. It was a beautifully told story about art, the process of achieving success, and the important for being critical. But of course, Wall-E surpasses it and being Pixar best. Period.
