I haven't seen any of the other Oscar-worthy movies yet (because they haven't been released yet) but if I feel that WALL-E is the best of those, I'll definitely be pulling for the Best Picture nom then. If it's not the best of those than I'm hoping that they don't risk it and just do Best Animated.

The only competition that WALL-E has on the animated front is Kung Fu Panda, and while I loved that movie, it is not of the same caliber that WALL-E is.

I imagine "The Tale of Despereaux" if it turns out to be good will be a contender as well.

I haven't seen that in its entirety yet, but yeah considering some of the praise I've heard for it I can imagine it being one of the nominees too.

I'm a bit annoyed it can only get one or the other. It should get both.

Wait...why can't it get both? Is that some kind of rule?

Yeah, you have to pick which categories you're going to compete in.
Does anyone know how much say the director has in which categories he'd like the film to compete in? I'd guess, not -- it's probably completely an Iger or executive decision.

After reading several articles, it sounds as though a film can be nominated for both Best Animated Feature and Best Picture. There was an article in the paper today talking about Oscar contenders, and they said that no one should be surprised if WALL-E gets a Best Picture nomination. It's a really long article, but I'll try to scan the WALL-E section sometime today.
