That'll be awesome if you do, and even awesomer if WALL-E can get both a Best Animated and Best Picture nom, then there's no way Pixar can lose.

This article actually talks about the Oscar "minors," which are the movies that deserve awards but which will likely be overlooked come Oscar time because the folks at the Academy don't remember any movie that came out before October. However, the author seems to believe that WALL-E will still be on everyone's mind once the Oscars come, just as it should be! I took pictures because I hate my scanner. Sorry the pictures are so big...

Yeah, I've seen The Dark Knight and Iron Man, and while they were good, they just didn't hold a candle to WALL-E for me. I have my doubts that TDK or Iron Man even have a chance of getting nominated in the Best Picture category, despite critical acclaim. I think TDK will definitely be up there for Best Supporting Actor for Heath Ledger, and Iron Man may get a nom for Best Actor for Robert Downey Jr., but I seriously have my doubts about Best Picture. If WALL-E can be nominated for both categories, though, I highly expect it'll be nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated.

Yeah, I think I agree. I wonder if Disney's sending out "feelers" just to see what the reaction would be. They've been really gun-shy after "Beauty and the Beast".

hmmmm . . . define "feelers" . . . sort of like dropping hints in the industry print and media to see how the industry responds? Not an official term -- just one of those weird words I use and have no idea why.

I thought the only reason why no animated film has made it into the Best Picture catagory since "Beauty and the Beast" was becuse they created the Best Animated Picture catagory the next year and felt that putting any animated film into that catagory was good enough. I got the impression it wasn't because there wasn't an animated film worthy of Best Picture, but because it didn't cross anyone's mind after the creation of the Best Animated catagory that any animated film should go into the Best Picture catagory.

Which is ridiculous, but I'd believe it if it's true.

I can't remember all the discussion around it -- but as I recall it was more about animation not having any category to compete in other than "Best Picture". There are "Best Drama", "Best Comedy" categories and since animation (especially at the time) tends to have a "category" feel to it because of the whole formula thing, it seemed appropriate to some people to give it its own category. Plus it would allow animated films to compete against each other.
Now, I don't necessarily agree with all that, but some in animation industry do think it was a good move -- or at least a move in the right direction. I really don't personally know how I feel about it or if it's been good or bad in general for animation to have this "category" because I can see positive and negative effects from the whole "put the cartoons in one room and let them fight it out" philosophy.

Question: I remember hearing that Ratatouille got the same kind of hype. People thought it should be nominated for Best Picture. Was the hype this intense in that case?

Question: I remember hearing that Ratatouille got the same kind of hype. People thought it should be nominated for Best Picture. Was the hype this intense in that case? I wasn't very involved with Ratatouille due to not really caring for the previews and finding it a good but not favorite movie when I did see it on DVD. However, I don't quite remember hearing this much about it, in newspapers and such, as far as Best Picture noms went. It also didn't have as high of a critical consensus, I don't believe.
