Discuss the CEO of BnL here! I know we only see him a few times throughout the movie so we don't get to know him really well...but what impressions did you have of him?

I loved how they merged him into the "President" of the US as well as of BnL, although it may be more accurate to say that BnL became the main government and took over or whatever. Still, very nice way to indicate just how much consumerism had taken over.

One thing that took me several viewings to catch was that when we see Shelby standing in front of the Buy n Large White House-esque sign, his head blocks all of the letters except for BU....RGE. George Bush, possibly? Or should I say "Bush, George?"

Bush George, or Burger? I loved the "Stay the Course" Bush reference, though.

And with Shelby at the top of it all...he must have had a ton of power back in his day. He's also one of the only live actors we see in the movie. Anyone think there's any particular reason they decided to use a live actor for him instead of CGI? I've thought about this and I can't really come up with an answer.

Well, since the "Hello Dolly" footage was live action (they couldn't make that CGI, could they?), all of the footage that took place in the past basically had to be live action. It's also an artistic choice, because, if you look at all of the portraits of the former captains, they progressively become less realistic and more cartoony, which kind of symbolizes the loss of humanity.

Fred Willard did a good job in playing such a corporate slimebag. The "stay the course" could've been a double entendre in that it actually refers to space traveling/trajectory while sneaking in a suble shot at Bush. That's really good writing, IMO.

Good answer, trashbag. Actually, now that you mention it, I think I've heard that explanation before, but I probably forgot it somewhere along the way. So the past is represented by live footage...interesting.

yep, also the original inhabitants of the axiom as portrayed in the advertisement are also live actors as for shelby well, he seemed kinda well.. nonchelant about the whole situation and a perfect caricature of the typical corporate entity, think about the scene at the begining where you see a pan scene past this GINORMOUS superstore that had to be MILES long (a parody of of course a super wal-mart being so bloody big), and a gas station with dozens if not hundreds of pumps, a good commentary on just HOW gluttonous society had been.. interestingly the opening shots show wind farms and nuclear cooling towers (note those cooling tower designs are not unique to nuclear plants but are primarily used there), and alot of the robots are hinted at being solar (such as wall-e and eve) so why would there be a gas station if hardly anything used gas anymore?

Live action footage [other than Hello Dolly] was used because
1. It was cool. 2. Fred Willard's a better CEO in live action.

he was an interesting character as he was to some extent a non character, rather a shadow of a memory of a person, interesting concept

Yes, that's true . . . I forget sometimes that he's LONG dead . . . we're not seeing a real person . . . again, just adds to the whole "shivery" feeling . . .

He IS still a character. He's effected the future, and his spirit unfortunately lives on in Auto and The Axiom.
