Talk about the masters of anime here. My personal favorites are Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, with Castle in the Sky and Howl's Moving Castle coming in second.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of the best story-tellers ever, in my opinion. Spirited Away alone is one of the most creative, unique, and original films I have ever seen, and also one of the most creative, unique, and original stories I know of.

Absolutely.
Personally I'm a bigger personal fan of Isao Takahata (sort of the Stanton of Studio Ghibli if Miyazaki is the Lasseter) because his characters feel so real and intense. (Graveyard of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, My Neighbors the Yamadas) but Miyazaki is absolutely the reigning genius of anime.

Miyazaki is amazing. I've actually never seen anything by Isao Takahata though (I've heard Grave of the Fireflies is REALLY sad, though).

No, not sad . . . absolutely heart-breaking. The characters feel so real that as they descend into this horrible existance, your heart just cries out for them. Seriously, this is one of my all time favorites, but do not watch it if you are already feeling a bit down or tired. It's so intense; I've heard people say that they were scared to watch it again because it affected them so much. (One guy told me he wanted to die after he watched it -- that's a little extreme I think, but if he was going through some rough times in his personal life, it might have been understandable.)
If you can handle really intense emotional films though (and actually find them fascinating, like I do), it's an absolutely MUST SEE.
