Hahaha...I always knew the Japanese had better taste than us Westerners.

That's very peculiar. Then again, I don't know if Batman is a household name over there like it is here, but you'd think with all the hype the Japanese would have wanted to conform just like the North American audience. I'm psyched to see how WALL-E fares in Japan. Something tells me it will either be a phenomenon, or a disaster (I'm willing to bet the former).

Wow, that is surprising and yet unsurprising at the same time.

Somewhat surprising, but somehow...not, like Bartle said. Japan doesn't conform to popular Western culture. I'm imagining WALL-E may be this year's "biggest" in Japan now!

Yes, I think WALL-E will be huge there. I can't even fathom why it wouldn't get a fantastic response from the Japanese public. Pixar is so respected, it's a great story, it's sci fi, it's a love story -- if it doesn't do well, I will really, really be shocked and want to know what in the world went wrong. I agree that TDK's "failure" in Japan at this point has nothing to do with Miyasaki's film. I haven't seen TDK (and don't plan to), but from what I understand about the film, it doesn't sound like something the typical Japanese movie goer would really get into. But, again, it just shows to me the ultimate superiority of WALL-E over TDK as a "classic film" -- to me a really great film is one that transcends culture (like Miyasaki films) and speaks to virtually everyone. WALL-E absolutely does that and I'm sure this will be proved yet again in December. Take that, Batman! Kazow!

Oh yeah, and I don't get their comparison to Heat and The French Connection. Just wanted to express my confusion about that.

I just translated "excellent film" into Hiragana Japanese (which I know a little of), and I added in four characters, "banzai," which is basically an interjection used to express reverence for the emperor, but it sounds funny when an American says it . I added in "WALL-E," and got this: Hiragana: ばんざいWALL-Eえいがゆうりょう Romaji: Banzai! WALL-E eiga yuuryou! English: Hurrah! WALL-E is an excellent film! So hopefully they'll be saying those things in December. ;D
