I'm pretty sure it will be nominated, but do you guys think it can/will win?

Hard to tell. Depends on the competition. Anyone know any others that might be nominated? (I'm not as up on the shorts as I am with feature films.)

I honestly usually don't hear about them, except for Pixar's, until they get nominated. Presto will definitely be the most easily recognizable amongst the shorts, anyway.

I'm in the same boat. I have no idea what the competition is, so I can't say whether I think Presto could win or not.

The shorts competition is usually a lot more wide open since it's comparatively easier to make a really fantastic short than a feature-length film. I love Presto -- but usually there are some pretty sophisticated, intellectual and sometimes even philosophical shorts produced that get nominated -- and Presto could be considered pretty light fare against something heavier in content.

Well, if I remember correctly For the Birds was nominated and won (at least I *think* that's what it said on the DVD) which was pretty light too, so I guess only time will tell. I guess the category I was thinking of with this thread was "Best Short Film, Animated" though.

Oh, yeah . . . "Geri's Game" for sure, and it was hardly a philosophical masterpiece. "Tin Toy" and "For the Birds" were the other winners. Four others were nominees. It's just that the shorts competition is really interesting because it's so wide open for entries. It's also a place where new directors who are up-and-coming try to get their feet wet and sometimes people like that will take crazy chances on subject matter because they've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. And those gambles sometimes pay off big time. I'm thinking especially of "Bunny" by Chris Wedge in 1998. (Of course, there were no Pixar films nominated that year. )

That's what I would do! I think if the Academy is feeling rather "fluffy" next spring, Presto will win.
