Someone brought this up at Pixar Planet 10,000 years ago, so I don't know who it was. I thought it would be a good topic for discussion, though.
My question is, how aware is Wall-E of what he is doing for the humans and for earth? Does he understand the situation the earth is in, how it was once a beautiful place, but that the humans have trashed in and made it unlivable? Does he know the significance of the plant, that is the key to restoring earth to it's former state and to bringing the humans back? Or is he just a naive little robot who just wants to please his Ev-ah and help her accomplish her directive? Any thoughts?

Well The Intergalactic Guide confirms that he had no clue how special the plant was or how it meant, and the Junior Novelization backs that up by saying he only knew on an instinctive, but not conscious level that the plant was something special.
As for if he's aware of the state the Earth is in, I really don't know. I think he knows things aren't "right" since he gets glimpses of the "right" way (the plant, the stars through the smog, etc.). I don't think, however, he realizes just what his job is or how instrumental he is in saving the planet. I think he just does what he was programmed for when "at work" and that's that for him.

Yeah, that's what I think. After WALL-E meets EVE, everything he does is for her. Everything else is a byproduct of his simple objective to please her and earn her love.

good question.. remember he picked the plant BEFORE meeting eve so that part was merely curiosity, the first time he showed it to eve it was certainly just to show her 'hey look what i found' and later in the trash heap it was certainly so they could get to earth so she could fix him.. as for in between.. dunno

I would say it's clear that WALL-E doesn't understand the magnitude of the situation he is in at any moment in the film. That may sound "bad," but that's the entire point of the character; his innocence is his most endearing quality! He merely wants to please EVE. I especially love his fascination with what is beyond the Earth, as in space; as mentioned, he looks up at the stars and wonders what they are, reflecting the thoughts early humans must of had. Then when he gets to travel into space, he is in awe by the beautiful illuminated structures he sees, with an almost childlike sense of wonder. So no, he wouldn't quite comprehend that the Earth isn't quite right, because he "grew up" there, so that appears normal to him. But he does feel that there is something larger out there, and it intrigues him very much.

I agree with all the above. I think that when he is on the Axiom he starts to get a bigger picture, but while he's on Earth, his knowledge is pretty limited.
One thing I would say (and just to do a shameless plug for my fanfics), it seems to me that over his lifetime of 700 years on Earth, he has probably seen some changes happen in the environment as the Earth is healing itself and, depending on where he would be in his personality development at the time, he might appreciate those changes as being positive, but again -- overall big picture? No way.

A good point, hopper. Hello, Dolly is his main reference point and there are many lush, flowery and lots of green scenes in the film. And perhaps that was part of what attracted him to the plant in the first place.

I always imagined that Wall-E was just following a directive that he had no idea what it meant. However, I do believe that he somewhat enjoyed it and was proud of it. Remember when Wall-E wakes up one morning, and he "sighs" contently, as if he is ready for a new day.
I believe he senses lonliness after a while, but I don't think he really understands the whole "pollution" thing.
