According to Wikipedia, an American cockroach can live at max for a year.
How old do you think Hal is?

Well, if the game is to be believed Hal is 700 or so. ;D I guess our best bet would be to believe that previous "Hal's" have had mates and reproduced (err, assuming cockroaches don't reproduce asexually, I have no clue, I barely passed biology), and that this is simply one in a long line of them.

That's actually what I was thinking too . . . and, yes, they reproduce just like other insects. (Biology was actually one of my stronger subjects. ) But within the realm of "suspend disbelief" . . . if I was to say that Hal was, say 50 years old -- would anyone find that hard to believe . . . or would you feel you could accept in the context of WALL-E's world? Just trying to get a feel for what "feels" real and what sounds ludicrous . . .

According to Wikipedia, an American cockroach can live at max for a year. How old do you think Hal is? It seems that there is no definite estimate to how old Hal is, we have no idea how he met WALL-E, but just guessing, around 700 years, the game shows him 700 years before the shutdown.

I'd say if you go with the idea that Hal is just one in a long line over the 700 year time frame from when we first see him in the game to when we first see him in the movie, then I'd be perfectly happy to accept Hal as a 50 year old cockroach. After all, with all the pollutants, who knows what kind of things were floating around in the air?

I wouldn't find it unrealistic how long Hal has lived, but I do think it's cute the idea that Hal's family has been so long with Wall-E and well taken care of. Heh.

What a sweet thought . . . definitely filing this one away . . .

The WALL-E website had that info in, I believe, the "Cups" game.

Hal is immortal. Seriously. When the sun swells to a red giant and scorches the Earth 5 billion years from now, he's going to live through it.

I got a feeling that Wall-E met Hal for the first time in the movie's opening scene. You see Hal crawling out of a can and Wall-E made several gestures to convince Hal that he meant good, then Hal happily jumped down on Wall-E and went home with him. So, Hal can be a normal, but the last surviving, roach.

Actually, I've heard a few reviewers say this too . . . but I personally don't think WALL-E and Hal are meeting each other for the first time at the beginning of the film. 1. Hal's been following WALL-E for the entire first sequence. Not normal cockroach behavior; normal pet behavior. 2. WALL-E already has a little place set up for Hal right next to his own storage space in the trailer. (Complete with lunch box and extra Twinkies.) 3. Hal seems to be very familiar with WALL-E's habits (solar charging, route he takes home). Just the way he acts when WALL-E does things -- Hal seems to anticipate what he's going to do and reacts appropriately (sits with him until he's charged, holds on tighter when he knows WALL-E will go full speed, etc.). 4. WALL-E seems to be very familiar with Hal's needs. He keeps his eye on Hal all the time and seems to always have a pretty good idea where he is and how he's doing. Just my two cents . . .

Yeah, the first time I saw the movie I just assumed they were meeting each other for the first time. But the second time through, Hal's behavior seemed to indicate to me that he had been around WALL-E for some time.

It always seemed to me that Hal had definitely been with WALL-E for a long time already, even from the first watch-through. I dunno, I thought we *might* see them meet for the first time for about the first few seconds Hal was on-screen, but after that I was sure they had been together for a while.

...That can explain so many questions. I'm convinced.
