I was just thinking about this the other day. Before you saw Wall-E and found out how brilliant it was, what did you think of it? Did you think it looked stupid? Did you never hear of it until your friends dragged you to see it? What suprised you about the movie after you saw it? Tell me your stories...
For me, when I saw the trailer, I thought it looked really cute. I thought it would be just another really cute Pixar movie like Ratatouille or Finding Nemo. I didn't really know much about the story, just that there was this robot and he went to space and he had a cool robot pal. I didn't think the relationship between Wall-E and Eve would be taken so seriously. I thought it was just this silly crush Wall-E had and Eve would be a cool sidekick and that was it. In a nutshell, I didn't expect to be so blown away.
I also remember thinking that Wall-E was based on a short that Pixar did a long time ago and that they were going to make a feature length film out of it. I don't where I got that idea, but whatever. I think I might have misheard what Andrew Stanton said in the teaser trailer.
I remember when my friend invited me to go see Wall-E I didn't want to go at all. I was tired, I just had a long day at work, and my phone woke me up from my nap when my friend called me. I half expected to fall asleep during the movie, but didn't care, because I didn't think I would be missing much. Same deal if I had to leave to use the restroom. But I thought it would be nice to see if there were trailers for any cool movies that might be coming up that I would like...

I can honestly say I knew from the first trailer this movie was something insanely special. I proclaimed it Pixar's best ever months before it came out.

It's funny, because I see ever Pixar film within a week of it coming out, rain or shine. It's become such a tradition with me, I don't even think about whether I'll like it or not, so I hadn't given it much thought. The fact they had put an actual BNL website out sort of made me stop and wonder what was going on, but, again, I just had no idea what I was in for.
I think I was really expecting another "Finding Nemo" since it was Stanton's film. I think I really thought it was just gonna be another one of those really good Pixar films that you see and then say, "Okay, that'll be the next line of toy merchandising. Now, what's for dinner?"
Whoa. I sure wasn't thinking about dinner after coming out of the theater for the first time.

I knew it was going to be special from the first moment I heard about it. Now if that meant special in a good way or a bad way, I wasn't too sure. When I heard that there was going to be very little dialogue, I was thinking, "Wow, they're really taking a risk here. I'd like to see how they pull that off." And boy... they pulled it off quite well.

I had been looking forward to WALL-E long before it was announced. For many years, I've wondered if Pixar would ever make a science-fiction film, a genre that they had yet to explore(with the exception of Toy Story 2's opening sequence). I always felt that a combination of the two could make for something amazing.
But I never thought it would be this amazing!

When I saw the first trailer for it, I just kind of thought, "Well, it's an interesting premise, but that trailer sure doesn't tell you much about the movie, does it? Maybe it's supposed to be mysterious like that." Then I forgot about it until I saw the Super Bowl commercial. I got to see WALL-E play with a vacuum cleaner, which was cute. And Woody revealed that WALL-E "saves the world", and I thought, "Really? That cute little robot saves the world?" So I became curious again, but I never got to the point of thinking "This movie is going to be AWESOME, I HAVE to see it!" It wasn't until I was actually watching the movie that I realized just how special it is.
What surprised me after I saw it? Well...almost EVERYTHING, really. I mean, I didn't even know it was going to be a love story, or that it was going to have such powerful messages in it. I didn't know about Buy N Large, or the Axiom, or anything. I went into the movie almost totally ignorant. If you're interested in seeing my full reaction to the movie, I made a topic a while back called "My WALL-E Experience" (you might have to dig through the previous pages of topics to find it, though).

Believe it or not I actually didn't want to see this at first. But since I enjoyed Ratatouille, I decided "I HAVE TO SEE THIS MOVIE!"

Interesting stories you guys!
When the first trailer came out, the one that says "after 700 years of doing what he was built for, he's going to discover what he was meant for", my thoughts were, "What the hell is this? Another movie about a robot who thinks he stands out from everyone else..."
I then saw a later trailer and started to gain a bit interest.
The night I watched the movie, it felt like such a magical night. When I stepped out of the theater (I watched it at Victoria Gardens, which is like this new outdoor mall), all the lights, sounds, the moon was out, the air was nice warm... well, it's one of those moments where you wish you had someone special to share it with, along with watching the movie... It's not normally in my interest to feel like that, but I guess Wall-E just had that sort of profound effect on me.

Before I watched it, I thought it was just a generally good animated flick. After watching, I knew I was wrong. It was the MOST TERRIFIC, SPECTACULAR, HEAVENLY MASTERPIECE I've ever watched!!!!!!!!!! Everything in the movie is just great, ... story, mood, animation, teachings. Well, everything! This movie is the best, incomparable!!! ^^

I fell in love with Wall-E since the teaser. His adorable eyes and timid demeanor (as portrayed while he was rolling over to fix Luxo Jr. ...they should start EVERY Pixar movie like that now!) won me over, and I couldn't wait. The trailers shown on TV only added fuel to the fire and finally, going to see it...wow.
It still managed to exceed expectations.

Trashbag and I have had similar experiences, I see!
I saw the trailers, thought that they were incredibly vague, saw how adorable Wall•E was and thought, "oh. Cute." Nothing really any more elaborate than that. I knew that I would see it, because I always see every Pixar movie on opening night, but to say that I was really excited it would be exaggerating. The unorthodox way that they presented the character to us the first time (i.e. the original teaser with Andrew Stanton talking about "The Lunch") was intriguing, but it ultimately didn't tell me anything about the story. Also, I'm not particularly into "space sci-fi", and judging from the way that he gazed longingly up into the stars in the second trailer, I knew that that's where he was headed. So I remained blissfully stoic...
...until one of my film buff buddies said that the first forty-five minutes would have no traditional dialogue. THAT got my attention in a big way. I was ten kinds of stoked to hear that. The more animated films that can make use of subtlety and pantomime to get their characters' personalities across, the better. I went around telling everyone I knew that that's how it would be going down. I was surprised when a few of them seemed to be turned off by the fact, but I eventually dragged them to the cinema, and upon actually witnessing the brilliance onscreen, they got it.
Looking back, I think they did the right thing in marketing it with a significant amount of mystery. Though I didn't think the final trailer was very good (and was actually massively misleading), aside from that one, the advertising for "Wall•E" was handled very appropriately.

I didn't have an opinion. I actually forgot what the trailer was like, but I wanted to see it so badly simply because it was a new Pixar film, and they had been on a roll with Incredibles and Ratatouille.
Well ... dammnnn, "roll" doesn't even come close to touching the word I'm looking for now after seeing WALL-E.
