Yeah, it's pretty much the same for me. My opinion is affected by having a nephew that loves the movie, though, plus expecting it to be bad.

Quite frankly, the "I don't like so-and-so movie because I'm not a fan of it's subject matter" reason holds absolutely NO weight for me. Any story can reach out and appeal to a wide audience if it's told and handled with real skill, talent, and pure love, regardless of the subject matter.
I have no knowledge or interest in fine dining at all, but that didn't stop me from loving Ratatouille as a whole. And I'm sure that's the case with the majority of people who enjoyed that movie.
Cars did not fail to wow me because of my mininal knowledge/interest in automobiles. I thought the characters were generally fun and had great designs; and I really enjoyed the racing scenes that open and end the film (they were probably the highlights for me). It was the story that ultimately came up a little short.

Dead on. Same for me on "Ratouille". I'm not really a sci fi fan either and yet here I am. I'd actually like a film to MAKE me like a topic I would never have enjoyed before. That's the magic.

I actually walked out of the theater thinking, "Wow, that was...disappointing."
Upon watching it again, however, I've decided that while it isn't my favorite film in the world, I like it.
I think the reason it took Pixar fans so off-guard was McQueen is SUCH a departure from the typical protagonist of their films. The other Pixar heroes were friendly and likable, while McQueen was incredibly arrogant and egocentric. But his development rather interested me, so I decided I liked this film after all.

Wow, Castoro -- you nailed it. That's exactly why I didn't care for this film. I never could figure it out before.

It was the story that ultimately came up a little short. I concur with most of this. Had the story been truly as well-crafted as prior (and subsequent) efforts from Pixar, I probably would've been able to get into Cars. Although I have no great interest in Americana, for the most part (no doubt this did limit the international appeal of the film), that alone wasn't enough to make me dislike the movie. Nor was the improbable choice of Cars as characters; though admittedly I didn't like this, either. But as before, a well-crafted story would've made it easy to suspend my disbelief... Cars just wasn't good enough for that. That said, I don't quite hate it, but I don't have any great liking for it, either. Although it's probably still better than the efforts from most other companies making CG flicks, I hold Pixar to a higher standard... as such, Car does irritate me.

Hmm, when I came out of the theater after seeing Cars I said to myself "Pixar did it again!" I still stand by that statement, but at the same time I realize this is the closest to "average" Pixar has ever come. My point, though, is that they didn't, and I feel Pixar's worst is still certainly a step above most other films out there.

Agreed. I always surprise myself by finding out what appeals to me. As for Cars, I thought it was a cute movie. It had a bunch of funny scenes. It was weak at some points, and it was probably my least favorite Pixar movie, but that didn't make it horrible.

It was an okay film. I kinda liked it when I first saw it, but WALL-E sort of topped it off. Plus I'm a little annoyed with Owen Wilson's voice in the movie, to be honest.
