Stop-Motion Animation, in other words. It's good animation, but it's not as amazing as Harryhausen. The thing you have to remember, is that Burton had more advanced technology than someone like, say, Harryhausen. So, while the animation is great, it's sort of... cheap, if you know what I mean. At least compared to Harryhausen.
Nonetheless, it's a great film.

I loved this movie. If it ever comes out on DVD again, I will get it.
I have become a collector of Sally merchandise. I love her character. Action figure, tee shirts, clocks, and lithographs.

skycladrunner57, you're in luck. A 2-disc Special Edition is coming out toward the end of this month, I believe. I definitely plan on getting it...I saw the movie a long time ago, but I remember loving it. Plus, going through Halloween Town in Kingdom Hearts always makes me want to see the movie again.

Just to be really geeky . . . this film wasn't "claymation" (or plasticine like Aardman Studios does), it was armature-based. (Both forms are considered "stop-motion" because the animation is generated using the same approach.) The characters are puppets. Their faces don't "move" -- there's a different face for every variation of lip movement and the heads just keep being popped on and off for various shots. Plasticine and claymation characters are "molded" as the scene is shot to give the impression of movement. Some studios do a mix of both styles, but I believe Henry Selick (director of Nightmare) is pure "puppet" in his approach. Again, feel free to ignore the animation geek. I just feel compelled to say something because I spend WAY too much time reading about this stuff. 100% agree. A fantastically weird and fun film. I think I saw it at least 12 times in the theater when it came out. It was just the most visually rich thing I had seen up to that time and I couldn't get enough of it. (Of course, this was before Pixar.)

Yes, what a great character she is. The scene when she jumps out of the window, we see her in pieces on the ground, and then she gets up and sews herself back together -- wow, I get goosebumps every time I just think of that. She is one of the best female characters I've ever seen in animation -- just a sweet and gentle soul. You just can't help but want her to win Jack's heart.
Everyone here probably knows this already -- but just in case someone is a big Jack Skellington fan and doesn't know it -- Jack makes a cameo appearance in "James and the Giant Peach" (also directed by Henry Selick) as the captain of the sunken pirate ship.

Yep! Just a cameo -- about a two-minute scene and he never speaks.

This is my second favorite movie ever made (3 guesses what movie is at #1). I don't remember the first time seeing it, but I was really young, because me and my sister would always play "Sally dolls" where barbie was Sally and Ken was Jack and a seven dwarf doll was Dr. Finklestein and Sally would go around stalking Jack and Dr. Finklestein would catch her and lock her in her room, so she would feed him soup spiked with deadly night shade and he would fall asleep and the cycle would start all over again.
ANYWAYS...I was too young to fully appreciate it then, but I saw it again one Halloween and I became obsessed with it all over again. I just think it was amazingly done. Tim Burton's vision was genius, the story was great, Danny Elfman's score was fantastic. It's one of those special films you can't forget.
I have this one on VHS, but I really wish I had it on DVD. Maybe I will ask for it for Christmas along with my Wall-E and Hello Dolly DVDs.
