I've never pre-ordered something before. Does the item ship the day of release? Is there any chance they ship it a little early?

I've preordered from Amazon before and I can't remember exactly, but it seems to me like it arrived the day it came out in stores. I wouldn't swear to that memory, but I remember being shocked when the package arrived.
