I've seen this cited many times as people's favorite scene in the movie (and I'd have to say that it's mine too), so tell me: what was going through your mind (or perhaps your heart?) when you saw this scene the first time?
For me...I can't remember a moment in a movie that had ever made me feel so happy. I had been waiting, hoping for EVE to return WALL-E's affections...and I was rewarded with seeing the two of them just having the time of their lives being together. I was also totally in awe of the visuals here, like when they weave in and out of the Axiom's jet exhaust...it seemed even more visually impressive to me than the rest of the movie had already been. And when the Captain asked the computer to define "dancing", before the computer even gave her response, I thought to myself, "Oh, wow...it's what WALL-E and EVE are doing right now."
This was really THE moment of the movie that made me realize just what an incredible work of art I was watching.

Chills man. I immediately recognized it as my favorite scene in the film upon exiting the theater. I just loved the idea of floating through space with a little help from a fire extinguisher. But in addition, I always take note of the brilliant moment between John and Mary, when human contact is made for the first time in 700 years. And, of course, the icing was the perfectly timed "define dancing," and the perfectly executed definition by Sigourney Weaver.

Stunned silence, chills, and fighting back tears of joy.

Chills ditto. I remember being so happy that EVE was starting to appreciate WALL-E (since I was already in love with him at that point myself) and when he snuggled up to her (that shot in bkim's sig -- which I just get goosebumps looking at in every thread), I just went "Oooooawwwwww." And, seriously, that would have been good enough for me -- I really thought, okay, he got to be close to her, she gave him a kiss, oh, I'm so happy, but, that'll be it. Back to the story.
But it wasn't over. And I was so happy and surprised that Stanton didn't shy away from doing an all-out romantic dance sequence. Because, boy, that takes guts with how jaded people are today and the reality that he's gonna have audiences of small kids.
I just loved it and in the little bit where WALL-E shows EVE how he can flip over and she laughs and copies him, the tears started.

This scene means the world to me. This was the part when I remember thinking, "This is my new favorite movie." In fact, I remember the exact moment. It was right when Wall-E and Eve were weaving in and out of the jet exhaust. I got chills and a little teary eyes and it just amazed me, because when you see that part in the trailer, you think it's a chase scene and they're trying to escape something, but when you see it you realize they're just dancing together. But I didn't think of it as dancing until the ship is defining "dancing" and you see Wall-E and Eve twirling around and around each other. Just Beautiful. It was also the point when I realized the film was more of a love story than I expected it to be. So that in itself really blew me away.

The moment the captain said "define dancing" and my mind put two and two together that it was a dance, that's when I almost lost it. *shivers*

That scene really didn't make me feel anything, to be honest... ... it actually hit me way later after the movie, when that was the only scene I could really bring to mind... and that's when Lay Lady Lay popped in my head I think it's one of the most memorable scenes from the movie because of it's informality and sheer simplicity. I can honestly say it was the most beautiful display of romance I have ever seen, and all without the shmaltz!

I definitely felt a lump in my throat from how brilliantly executed the whole scene was. The music was what really did it for me; I can listen to it without the visuals, and I can still get the same feelings I felt in the theater.

Same here. When the captain lean on his chair and ask the computer, "psst... Computer, define Dancing..." God, I want to cry. Just imagining the scene makes me chill.

Great posts, everyone. I like how everyone is going into detail about it (and the fact that we are all going into detail about it just goes to show how much this scene affected us).

This scene is so beautiful and easily one of the top scenes in the movie for me. The music is one reason. It starts out so simple, and then builds into this glorious, majestic piece. The scene itself starts out perfectly as well. I love how EVE encourages him to come along with her, and he holds up the extinguisher like "What? With this thing? Sure!" and spins himself in a circle before shooting off. WALL-E could only watch EVE from the ground in awe as she flew around on Earth, but now he could finally join her in the sky for the first time. I love John and Mary's bit when they see WALL-E and EVE flying around together, as well as the computer's definition. The end of the entire scene was icing on the cake, with the fire extinguisher running out and EVE catching WALL-E before he could float away.
So, so perfect...It made me feel unbelievably happy.

I just realized that this famous scene from the movie is the equivalent of two dogs sharing a plate of spaghetti more than 50 years ago in another movie... [...in terms of audience reaction and popularity]

Something I really love about this scene that I didn't really notice the first time is when John and Mary are watching them and you see Wall-E and Eve's reflection in the window and they start spinning slower and closer together. The whole thing starts out just like, "WEEEE! This is fun!" but then it gets more and more romantic. askfhbleraufbjsdjk fgjawbdv kaerhjc
